Hey guys, I'm in need of major help

So I now own this extremely expensive software and I have absolutely no idea how to use it. I mentioned to Leon that I want to go back to school one of these decades to enter either the field of Astronomy or Computer Graphics...stuff. Sooooo I'm gonna try out the computer thing first. So, does anyone know how to use this program? I just got it earlier today ($3500!!! f'in expensive!) And also do any of you know of a good place to find tutorial vids? I can always check the help section in the actual program but I know there are probably better ones out there (but I just don't know what are good ones or not).

Watching those Dead Fantasy vids that Pabbs posted before have truly sparked my interest in this type of stuff. I always wanted to do these type of things but just never knew how. Hopefully this can help.

Thanks guys for the help!

I'm not much of a computer guy but my answer to you is youtube. Anything and everythinh is in youtube. Tutprials on how to shave properly from making your own pencil detonater and turning your camera into a tazer. But wow that's a lot of money. You mind shipping me a couple hundred bucks?

I use Maya Autodesk 2010 to mesh sims & sim objects for Sims 3. Very Happy lol

https://2img.net/h/oi39.tinypic.com/25strg7.png

^the image was too big..

This is a simple mesh for a swimsuit/lingerie that I wanted bigger boobs on..

So I that's what I use mine for..

The basic tutorials that came with mine helped me a lot, and figuring the keys to move around and the shortcuts as well. The tutorials are really good practice because they show you things that you'll actually use in whatever you're making. I'm not sure if 3DMax is similar though in that aspect. It seems like it would be.

Everything else, I guess YouTube.

Autodesk is pretty intermediate level for me.. On a scale of 1-10 I'd give Photoshop a 3 and Autodesk a .. 7. In terms of user-friendliness. So I suggest if you find something interesting. Do whatever they're doing in the tutorials/videos along with them.

I didn't know Maya existed when I got this program...didn't know this program existed either when I got it lol I bought a book (cheap on amazon!) so I'm going through the tutorials and what not that they give

apparently 3DS Max has problems with Mental Rays so it keeps crashing the program (which sucks too cause I had this spaceship flying in and landing on a platform and it was kinda cool lol) I downloaded the "patch" for it from the main site but it still doesn't work so unfortunately I have to leave that part out when I want to do editing

do you suggest I get Maya as well? thanks!

Hahaha, well you should search the internet some more and find a solution. I'm sure you're not the only one that had that problem. Read some forums =p

annnnnnd I feel uneasy recommending Maya for the following reasons:
  • I've never used 3DS Max
  • It's a lot more expensive than 3DS Max
  • I'm still learning Maya as well

On forums they said 3DS was better for beginners & that Maya was a bit more extensive and requires more time to fully utilize. Both are great programs, just depends what you want to use it for

"Maya 3D is best for television and movie applications because it has the ability to quickly create very realistic models. 3DS Max is more tuned for video games because of the ability to use the "Bi-Ped" function to create a large number of characters quickly."

With that being said, 3DS Max may be even better for what I try to do. Sad

You can download the Maya 2011 30day trial from the website, though

I'm definitely wanting to get into video games (but also just for the sheer fact of making simple movies for fun)

how long have you been using Maya? how long did it take you to get used to it?

Autodesk 3DS Max 2010 Space_10

just my first rendered picture, I'll be updating my facebook album with these images after this instead of just constantly bumping this topic

in the middle of rendering the animation (then gonna try to find sound effects to go with it) and then it will be my final bump lol

good start man keep it up. the ship is lookin good but can't really tell what some of the black stuff on it is. i geuss u can try using some more gray/white/green or other colors to show what that is. those towers are pretty cool and you can always experiment with different shapes like instead of the rounded ball at the top uc an try a spike or something.

question: do you have to apply all those shadows on your own or the program does that? the shadows look pretty good. if possible and if you have time, definitely try to add some stuff in the background
