I GOT IT AND I'M LOVING IT!

Ok guys, it's been awhile since this has been out and I've beaten it several times. So why no review? Cause I've been loving this too much to write about it lol. If that didn't warn you...this will be a biased review.

Gameplay: This is a shooter but unlike all the others, it's not a true FPS. This is an over the shoulder third person view shooter. For me, I like this better because I like to see the character I'm using (even if it's to an extent). Like other shooters, there's a reticule in the middle of the screen which you can direct and target your enemies. Let's not talk about the similarities. What's different about this game over all the others is the cover system. Almost no other game has this type of system going (most others you have to pray that you're in cover and hope that your character model isn't sticking out). By pressing a button, you can slide into cover and you can either blind fire out of cover (where you have little chance of getting hit), or you can aim and you'll pop out enough to shoot more accurately.
I covered the weapons on another post so I won't need to go over those.

Graphics: As I mentioned in my review of Bulletstorm, this was made through the Unreal Engine 3 and it produces the most awesome, realistic, beautiful graphics of all. The environments are gorgeous and jaw dropping and even the character models are great (though they did make the women a bit manly).

Sounds: This game is all about explosions and it delivers! Everything sounds realistic. The sound of a torque bow when it fires, the detonation from a fired boomshot, to the revving of a chainsaw (pray that you're not hearing that sound behind you!)...all perfect! And the music that plays through the background fits the mood perfectly. Be it during a firefight, an exploration scene, or even down time, it is all pleasing to the ears. They also provide a hidden song on Gridlock if you don't destroy the ash people for a round Smile Such a great song.

Replayability:
Extremely High. I've played through the campaign 4 times now and playing again with 3 other friends to beat it on the 4 player co-op on Insane. And the multiplayer modes of firefights, Horde, or Beast will keep you coming back.

Multiplayer/Online:
As mentioned in another post, this is where everything comes alive, so I don't need to delve into this again.

Overall: 9.8

that and me finally giving in to using a shotgun... I have shotguns in shooters.

Though. . . I'm pretty potent with a hammerburst.

You were doing good. We were winning and doing really well as a team, you, your cousin, and my two buds. JourneyHitman that was in the team is the one I play with all the time so we know how to compensate for each other's play styles extremely well.

My good friend SFGollum, I know him in real life, is only decent at the game. But he'll learn.

The only thing we lacked when playing last night was communication. Besides me, nobody was helping out the others players, telling them where the opponents were, unless it was asked. Something like that shouldn't have to be asked and is automatic. But then again it's fine cause my main group does it automatically and that's what I'm used to so I shouldn't push that on others. It would just be nice Razz (Especially when it comes to Capture the Leader, the leader should be telling where all the opponents are through the Leader Vision)

I'm seeing this game mentioned alot by peeps in the fighting game scene, thinking about copping it. what has people hooked on this game? what's your favorite aspect about it?

Cover system: where in shooters you "hope" to be in cover while also shooting, Gears actually has a true cover system.

Cool Weapons: It has the standard weaponry like other shooters but has a sick twist cause it focuses more on hardcore, brutal deaths. Every weapon has something that will completely decimate the opposition. I mean c'mon! The Lancer has been named one of the greatest weapons in gaming history!

Executions: Every weapon has a different kill animation when you walk up to a downed enemy. My favorite is ripping off an arm and beating them to a pulp with it. Gruesome!

Graphics: Using the Unreal Engine, the graphics are far superior to any of the other standard graphics games come in (especially shooters)

Multiplayer: Aside from the typical Team Deathmatch (which Gears has 3 different versions of) it has other much cooler modes:
- Capture the Leader is like Capture the Flag but the leader is an actual player and you want to keep him safe and alive (he fights back unlike a flag on a pole)
- Annex/King of the Hill is like Headquarters in COD but has 3x the amount of spots to choose from, and these spots have power weapons Very Happy
- Wingman is 4 teams of 2 battling it out to survive (you better hope you have a good team mate!)

Unlike other shooters, it's only 5v5. No overcrowding of the maps with dozens of people.

Buddy System: Unless you are completely blown apart, you will be downed if shot too much from the assault rifle-esque guns. Your team mate can come up to you and revive you, putting you back into the fray. Beware, after the 3rd down, you're done and have to respawn.

Maps are smaller - Makes it easy to quickly jump back into the fray. No waiting 30 seconds to find someone. You're always fighting and the fire fights are always intense.

No Camping - Cause the maps are smaller, you can't camp. You can try but you will be destroyed. Camping is for losers anyway who are afraid to die. Leave behind your kill streak and your worry of losing it. This is Gears, death is certain.

Skill is required for killing - No stupid n00b tubes, no cheap perks, no cheap kill streaks to help attain kills, no relying on abilities...yes, all games takes skill but this is all by the weapon you hold and how well you use it.

HORDE!!! The biggest thing to come to shooters and Gears started it off. Waves and waves of enemies comes down on you trying to annihilate your existence. Every shooter copied Gears the moment Epic released it in Gears 2 and it's STILL far superior to all those other cop outs and FAR more difficult. Which leads into...

BEAST!!! Just like Horde mode but instead of trying to survive the waves and waves of monsters...you ARE the monsters! Destroy those foolish humans trying to last against your might!

A killer story. Unlike other shooters who most people don't truly care for, Gears has an epic (no pun intended) story line that is awesome.

And it's not a typical FPS! This is over the shoulder and is glorious. Completely stands out from other shooters.

Points... contention or otherwise :p

Spawn Arena on DC enabled the player to beat others with their own limbs first, not new, but still effin awesome.

I love the down system if your team actually works as a team.

Camping... I have a two sided coin on this, and ina match we were in together (at time of release) you should remember this instance Mince... It was Gridlock... Our whole team kept dieing... while I'd sit back with the hammerburst and score down after down after down after down... Til I ran out of ammo... Camping is very strong in this game... if you use it as support. Solo camping will never work though.

Noob tube = Sawed off, though, if you mess up execution of it, you're fucked.

The story is ballin, though in light of superior gameplay (Dark Souls) I've not yet finished it.

I'm pretty miffed at the decrease in stun from melee... or how useless its become. I used to just take in the HB and down entire teams through good movement and well timed smacks to the grill. I'm sad the melee is weakened on the HB... oh well, death of two piecing, I can live with that.

Frag tags are still my favorite thing ever. Too bad I rarely get grenades to ninja around with Sad

I'm actually extremely happy they destroyed two piecing. It's a mechanic that should never have thrived to begin with. I frickin' owned in it but it was cheap and not a true Gears element. Also, because of the sawed-off, wall bouncing has lost some usefulness...however it still works heavily well in most scenarios.
